Is it OK to eat yogurt on its last day

In short: yes, if it was always kept cold and the pack is intact. Here's what to check.

In short: yes. A use-by date means the product is safe until the end of that day if storage conditions were met. Producers set it with a margin, so the last day is just as normal a day for yogurt as the first. The key word is «conditions».

What to check

  • the yogurt was kept at +2…+6 °C all the time — in the shop and at home;
  • the lid is flat, not domed, and the foil is intact;
  • it smells normally sour-milky, with no bitterness, yeast or «brew» notes;
  • no mould — even a small spot means the whole pot goes in the bin.

Live vs heat-treated

Yogurts with live cultures keep for a short time — usually 5 to 14 days — and get sourer near the date. That's normal. Heat-treated yogurts are warmed after fermentation and keep for weeks, but once opened they spoil as quickly as live ones.

Opened — eat it now

Eat an opened yogurt the same day and a large tub within a day or two, even if the date is far off. Use a clean spoon and don't put leftovers back. Yogurt that sat on the table for more than two hours is better not put back in the fridge.

After the date — no

Don't eat yogurt after its use-by date, even if it looks fine. Isrofsiz doesn't sell such items: perishables are automatically taken off sale at 23:59 the day before the last day, and we check the date on the pack from a photo.
